Get Involved

The fight for civil rights and liberties is one that can only be advanced as a community, and we are proud to work with fearless partners whose work has a direct impact on our everyday lives.

We accept donations to support the Foundation’s work. These provide funding for the organizations on the frontlines of the fight for First Amendment rights and rational sex and drug policies.

Since 1964, the Foundation’s combined efforts to advocate for First Amendment rights have positively impacted thousands of lives. We look forward to partnering with you to positively impact many others.

Historically, the Foundation has given out about 10 grants per year.

Grants typically run anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000.

The Foundation gives grants to organizations and individuals who fall under the purview of our mission statement. We do not donate to political campaigns.

Previous grantees can apply for additional grants, but they must be seeking support for new projects.

Grants and First Amendment Awards are separate. Honorees of the Awards are selected by a panel of judges for individual actions made in an effort to protect and enhance First Amendment rights. Grants are approved by the Foundation board and are given to support projects related to the First Amendment or the Foundation’s other key initiatives.

Yes, donations are tax-deductible.

Organizations apply to the Foundation for grants; their proposals list specific programs and initiatives to which we can direct our funds. When the Foundation makes grants, we are choosing specifically how the funds are utilized, as opposed to making general donations to large organizations.

Board members do not profit from donations.
